Why Yoga?
Yoga is a practice that combines stretching, controlled breathing, and relaxation. Yoga helps reduce stress, lower blood pressure, improve heart function, and calm body, mind, and spirit.
"Yoga is about showing up on your mat daily with no expectations of how it should go. It's about not believing the labels like 'too injured' or 'to old' or 'not flexible enough' or 'i'm not calm so I can't do yoga' and finding a new way to be the best version of yourself. Yoga is a lifestyle not an exercise program, although yoga has no judgement if you only wan to use the poses to exercise (it is great exercise). Yoga is about discovering those crazy thoughts in your head about why you 'can't' or 'shouldn't' are not true. It is about slowing down and seeking something greater than yourself. Yoga is more than what you wear or if you can headstand. Yoga is the ultimate practice of love."
welcome to hampstead yoga studio!
Ultimately....
Yoga is what you make it. There are not any classes at the studio that would be too "difficult" for you. The most difficult part about yoga is slowing down and finding stillness. In our constantly moving forward society that values busyness quieting the mind is a challenge. The deeper you breathe the stiller the body, the stiller the body the quieter the mind, the quieter the mind the more you can listen to the thoughts of your heart instead of the constant (many unneccessary) thoughts of the mind. Yoga is your time to slow down and spend only with yourself, it is your time to come home to yourself. Yoga is a practice because it is something you can never "master." Yoga means to unite the mind and body together as one, and the breath is what brings your attention into your body so that you can let go of the running that we do in our lives off of our mat. Everytime you come to your mat you will discover something different about yourself. Yoga is about self discovery, self reflection, listening inwards, feeling instead of forcing, letting go of the ego (the story of who you tell yourself you are using labels), allowing yourself to be a "human-being, instead of a human-doing."
It is your time to honor where you are in your life, and know that whatever it is that you feel is okay. "You can never step in the same river twice," is an old zen proverb that can help you arrive to where you are everytime you step on your mat, you will never be in this same place you are in your life today. Yoga allows you to slow down to create a sense of mindfulness--by moving the body with the breath, by using the breath to listen to the body, and listening to the body to find out what you are storing that is keeping you functioning from the auto-pilot instead of true presence. Yoga is allows you to create a connection go to yourself so you can experience your life instead of functioning out of habit. It allows you to connect to the peace and joy that exist inside of you naturally.
It is thought that the body stores our entire life story, through self study with the breath and the moving of the body through yoga poses, the body naturally releases the stress and stories you were clinging to, which is why yoga has such a positive effect on your body mind and soul. The poses in yoga were created thousands of years ago to open and tone the body to allow you to move deeper inwards with every breath.

Yoga is for everyone! One of the most common reasons people think yoga is difficult or they can't do yoga is because they are not flexible. Flexible or not flexible, every person's body is different. Actually, coming to your mat not very flexible is more beneficial than having the natural flexibility because we are using the poses to open the body, and as you release tension and become more flexible you learn more and more about yourself. "yoga is not about touching your toes but about what you learn on the way down."
Yoga is about finding your connection to yourself. It is about letting go of labels, expectations, and busyness of the outside world and using the time on your mat as your sacred space and your time to just be with yourself. Yoga is a constant journey inwards, coming home to yourself. Yoga is feeling your breath move through your body, and using the poses to open your body to learn about yourself.
Yoga is a three thousand year old practice of extraordinary living that concerns itself with every aspect of human functioning--mental, physical, and spiritual.
Millions of Americans currently enjoy the many benefits that this practice brings to their life. Yoga is an effective, low-impact form of exercise that involves integration of every muscle, organ, and cell of the body, bringing balance to the body and the mind by using breathing to bring your body, mind, and breath into one.
